Yunnan Haicai folk singing is a traditional singing style from Yi ethnic group in China. It is part of the national intangible cultural heritage. Haicai singing is famous for its wide music range and sustaining breath. It is sung when people get together to socialize and connect. The earliest literature record dated back to the Qing dynasty. “Haicai” is a type of plant living in the water of Yilong lake in Shiping city. The singing was named after this plant because Yi people used to sing while working on the lake.
